Biography
carrie R was born at the Jersey Shore in 1990.
In her early twenties, she survived a lightning strike and, a year later, a major car crash that fractured two vertebrae in her lower spine.
She makes sculptures and drawings in her Olde Kensington studio in Philadelphia and likes to keep it weird.
In 2026, she is having her first solo exhibition and attending her first residency.
She has exhibited in cities all along the US East Coast and in Los Angeles, and has participated in several fairs in recent years.
She is grateful for the ride, even if it is a simulation.

carrie R is a sculptor born in 1990 at the Jersey Shore, based in Philadelphia, PA. She holds a BFA in Sculpture from Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University. carrie has exhibited widely along the US East Coast and in Los Angeles, with presentations including SPLIT LEVEL Fair (NYC), Upstate Art Weekend (NY), Scout Art Fair (Baltimore), West Chester University (PA), Pamplemousse Gallery (Richmond), Good Mother Gallery (Los Angeles), Blah Blah Gallery (Philadelphia), and 5-50 Gallery (NYC). In 2026 she has forthcoming two-person exhibitions, including IRL Gallery in New York City, and will attend her first international residency at Mudhouse in Crete, Greece. She has received two Illuminate the Arts Grants from the City of Philadelphia.
Statement
I create biomorphic sculptures that begin with movement, balance, and gravity, with the constraints that bodies and spaces place on form. Working in Aqua-Resin and cement clay over metal armatures, embedding pigments directly so color becomes structure as well as surface, I build forms that feel recognizable but have been pushed until they resist identification. Each piece negotiates a specific relationship to gravity: how it leans, where it finds balance, and the ways it resists or surrenders to its own weight. I push forms toward strangeness, disrupting symmetry until something feels most alive. The work embodies tension, vulnerability, and defiance without illustrating specific narratives.
